Google Algorithm Change: At the end of January, Google decided to use the page layout of your site to determine where to rank you.

More specifically, your ranking will be hurt if you have fewer ads and more useful content above the fold (top half) of your site.
The purpose is to penalize sites that aren’t providing quality content to their visitors. This, in turn, will improve their overall search results for the rest of us.
